Building Tips & Ideas
THREE FAMILIES THAT BUILD TOGETHER!
At the LEGO® Club, we’re always keeping an eye out for parents and kids who build together. We recently spoke with three families who have created some pretty amazing LEGO projects. Read on to find out all about them and just why they think family building is so important…and fun!

MEET PETER AND OLAF!
Peter and his dad Olaf caught our attention when they entered the LEGO Family Building Challenge in LEGO Magazine. Peter’s favorite subject at school is P.E. He likes to play soccer and tennis, and he loves to build LEGO sets. Here’s what he had to say when we asked him about building with his dad!

Do you often build together as a family?
“Yes.”

How does your family build together?
“With LEGO sets, Dad or Mom find the pieces I need for each step so I don’t have to look for them.”

What does LEGO building mean to your family?
“I think LEGO bricks are awesome. They are much more than just building blocks. My Dad has been building with LEGO bricks since he was a kid, and he loves the creativity they inspire.”

How did you decide what to make for the LEGO Magazine Family Building Challenge?
“We had built the spaceship before we learned about the Challenge, and it was so cool that I didn’t want to take it apart. We kept adding pieces to it over several weeks, and when we read about the Challenge, we thought we’d enter it. It’s my second-longest LEGO spaceship ever.”

Thanks, Peter and Olaf!

MEET KURT, JACOB & BETHANY!
Kurt (40) is an engineer for a pharmaceutical company. He enjoys spending time with his family and working on their old house. Jacob (9) likes history and math, takes piano lessons, and is involved in drama. He likes to build with LEGO bricks and play outside. Bethany (7) enjoys history and Latin, takes violin lessons, and is also involved in drama. She likes to read, do things outside, and help take care of the family cats and her baby brother.

Do you often build together as a family?
“Yes, as much as possible, especially on weekends.”

How does your family build together?
“If we are working from instructions, Dad works ahead and finds pieces, and Jake and Beth put the model together. When we are not working from instructions, we discuss the model and each person builds a part, then we assemble the pieces when we are done with our parts. We also spend quite a bit of time picking bricks up off the floor, as we have a very large collection.”

What does LEGO building mean to your family?
“The kids like to create and play with the finished models. Dad likes to help the kids think creatively and imagine things they can do.”

How did you decide what to make for the LEGO Magazine Family Building Challenge?
“[We were inspired by] a comic strip about a LEGO Café in the BrickMaster Magazine in which the family building contest was announced.”

Thanks, Kurt, Jake and Beth! Any last words or advice for all the LEGO Club families reading this?
“Don’t get too stressed out if what you are building does not work out perfectly. The great thing about LEGO bricks is that they are made to take apart and try again.”

MEET TED AND DOMINICK!

Ted is an engineer whose hobbies include weightlifting, home improvement, and teaching science. He had LEGO sets of his own as a kid, and played with his friends’ sets, too. Dominick’s favorite subject in school is science. He likes karate, inventing with LEGO bricks, and drawing.

Do you often build together as a family?
“Yes. We build together once a week or so.”

How does your family build together?
“Sometimes we build two different cars or robots, and then have them battle. Dominick is the good guy, while Ted is the bad guy. We also build larger things like buildings together. Usually, Dominick comes up with the idea and then Ted helps figure out how to make it.”

What does LEGO building mean to your family?
“We think LEGO bricks are lots of fun to build with. We like being creative with them.”

How did you decide what to make for the LEGO Magazine Family Building Challenge?
“We decided to build our spaceport because of the new Mars Mission sets. We also have lots of Star Wars™, Alpha Team and EXO-FORCE sets, so we have plenty of good parts to use to make science fiction machines. We wanted to build a place where people and robots from different sets could meet.”

How did you work together to build your family model?
“First we built several spaceships over a couple of weeks. To build the spaceport, we decided to use two flat bases to make it big enough to park the spaceships around. We built the walls by just stacking together as many bricks as we could find. Dominick built the snack bar and vending machine because he thought the pilots would want to have something to eat. Ted built the four-sided television so that all of the people and robots in the spaceport could see when the next flights were going to leave. The space-traffic control tower is made from some older space mission parts and an X-Pod for the top.”

Thanks, Dominick and Ted!
Any last words or advice for all the LEGO Club families reading this? “Be creative and have fun. We enjoy combining parts from lots of different sets to make new things.”
