Inside Scoop

Somewhere in the depths of the LEGO® HQ is a very special studio. It isn’t the shipyards of Kuat or Mon Calamari but this is where all the LEGO® Star Wars™ ships and vehicles are created, and while it isn’t guarded by Stormtroopers or the Sarlacc it’s just as hard to get inside!

LEGO Club was lucky enough to be given exclusive access and put a tractor beam on Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Creative Lead on LEGO Star Wars™!

Hi Jens, how are you?
I am fine...but very busy making the new LEGO® Star Wars™ models!
Why don't you tell us what you do for TLG?
I am the Creative lead on LEGO Star Wars™ and responsible for the model development.

Do you have to know a lot about Star Wars™ to be a LEGO Star Wars™ designer?
Of course it's good to know a lot about the Star Wars™ universe to work on LEGO Star Wars™ but it is also possible to learn some of that later. In the studio we have got all the movies, all the seasons of The Clone Wars, and a LOT of books!
How do you start a new model? What kind of things do you do first?
We watch the movie sequences where the model is seen, and then look at reference images from Lucas Licensing. It is important to make an accurate model. Then we decide which functions and Minifigures to add to the set...and then we start BUILDING!

How long does it take from start to finish?
That of course depends on the size of the model, but a sketch model can take from a day to several months.
Which LEGO Star Wars™ sets have you worked on?
As I have been working on LEGO Star Wars™ since year 2000, I have made a LOT of models! I have totally lost track!

Is there a lot of rivalry in the LEGO Star Wars™ studio?
No, I think that all the designers are very nice people, and we have a lot of fun together!

Who always gets the best models?
Everyone thinks they just get the best model, as normally the designers get to work on the models they would like to build the most!
